Historical Notes
At 8:46 a.m., firefighters at Engine Company 7 and Ladder Company 1 were on a routine assignment with the chief of Battalion 1, Joseph Pfeifer, investigating a reported gas leak several blocks north of the World Trade Center. Hearing a rumble, they looked up to see a large, low-flying plane. In horror, they watched as it crashed into the North Tower. Battalion Chief Pfeifer immediately signaled a “second alarm,” communicating the severity of the situation. Within two minutes, he then ordered the transmission of a “third alarm,” which called for the deployment of 23 engine and ladder companies, 12 chiefs, and 10 specialized units to the World Trade Center.
