America’s Camp was a community for children with family members killed on 9/11. The camp helped children build community based around healing and joy. Its organizers— directors, therapists, artists, and volunteer counselors—extended their mission beyond the camp through outreach projects.
America’s Camp reached out to other communities experiencing trauma. Campers painted T-shirts and sent them to Haitian children after the 2010 earthquake. Later, many volunteered as counselors at Camp Sea Stars North, a trauma-informed camp for survivors of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. This clay pendant was a keepsake from that camp.
