- Child's handmade watercolor crayon and paint drawing created by Jerome Nedd, Jr., son of Jerome O. Nedd. The drawing is green and blue with handwritten text that reads: "No | Words." The drawing was used to create a feather for the 2006 America's Camp collaborative art project, titled The Feathers of the Phoenix.
- Historical Notes
At America’s Camp, Jerome Nedd, Jr. befriended the children of first responders who tried to save people like his father—Jerome O. Nedd a chef at Windows on the World—on 9/11. These relationships and respect for responders’ actions motivated him to pursue a career as an FDNY firefighter. “I know what it’s like to be one of those people who are having their worst day,” he recalled. “I want to…be a light for them.”
Before 2006, Nedd was reluctant to join art projects at America’s Camp. That summer, encouraged by his friends and Artistic Director Traci Molloy, he created this feather. Reflecting on his father’s death and the support he received at camp felt “overwhelming,” he recalled.
