- Program for the presentation of the Brendan Gill Prize by the Municipal Art Society of New York, held on October 2, 2003. The program is printed on a dark purple paper with printed text on the front that reads: "BRENDAN GILL PRIZE." Embossed on the front is an image of a female figure dancing with a child in her arms. A dark blue fabric tassel is looped through the program. Inside the program is printed text describing the creators of Tribute in Light as the recipients of the 2003 Brendan Gill Prize, an annual award recognizing art that captures the “spirit and energy of New York City.” Another page lists previous recipients of the award.
- Historical Notes
In the fall of 2001, multiple artists coalesced around a shared creative vision to honor the victims of 9/11 by symbolically restoring the Twin Towers to the skyline through beams of light. They collaborated with the Municipal Art Society of New York, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and Creative Time to debut Tribute in Light on March 11, 2002, for the six-month anniversary of 9/11. Intended to be presented only once, the installation has become an annual commemoration presented by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and Con Edison.
In 2003, the Municipal Art Society of New York honored the creators of Tribute in Light with the Brendan Gill Prize, awarded annually to recognize art that captures the “spirit and energy of New York City.” The team included architects and artists John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian LaVerdiere, and Paul Myoda, as well as and lighting designer Paul Marantz.
