Eyeglasses

- Pair of safety eyeglasses belonging to Massimo Moratti. The glasses are made of gray plastic with deep frames that act as barriers to block peripheral vision. The glasses also include specially shaded lenses that flip down over the normal eyeglass.
- Historical Notes
In the fall of 2001, multiple artists coalesced around a shared creative vision to honor the victims of 9/11 by symbolically restoring the Twin Towers to the skyline through beams of light. They collaborated with the Municipal Art Society of New York, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and Creative Time to debut Tribute in Light on March 11, 2002 for the six-month anniversary of 9/11. Intended to be presented only once, the installation has become an annual commemoration presented by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and Con Edison.
Since 2002, Massimo Moratti has traveled from Italy to calibrate manually the 88 light fixtures that form Tribute in Light. These glasses protect his eyes from the high-powered xenon lightbulbs. In recent years, his son Matteo has joined him, describing the family’s connection to the tribute as “profound.”
