- Description
- West Point dress uniform hat known as a “shako” belonging to Patrick Dowdell, son of Kevin Christopher Dowdell. The hat is a rigid cylinder made of stiff black material with a glossy top. Around the base, a black glossy visor juts forward with a gold-colored trimmed edge. Just above the visor runs a gold-colored decorative cord. On the front, the shako features a metal insignia for West Point, depicting a shield divided horizontally. The upper portion features an eagle, facing forward with its wings fully extended. The lower portion of the shield contains horizontal stripes, evoking the American flag. Integrated within the shield is a classical-style helmet. At the top of the shako is a tall black feather plume.
- Historical Notes
- Patrick Dowdell graduated from West Point in 2006. In the U.S. Army, he drew inspiration from fellow soldiers willing to risk their lives in response to 9/11. Dowdell said, “I wanted to…let them know there were a lot of people, especially back in New York, who appreciated their sacrifice.”
