- Historical Notes
Irene Sankoff and David Hein, an award-winning writing and composing team, traveled to Gander in 2011 to interview a few of the nearly 7,000 passengers and crew diverted to Newfoundland on 9/11, as well as the members of the communities who hosted them. Local residents of Gander and nearby towns provided food and shelter to the people they called “come from aways.”
Sankoff and Hein wrote their musical, Come From Away, to honor and share this story.
Come From Away has been performed all over the world, including on Broadway from 2017 to 2022. During certain performances, the production team invited the audience to share their thoughts on notepaper provided in the lobby. Theatergoers, including members of the 9/11 community, expressed how moved they were by the generosity of the Gander townspeople.
