Uniform Coat
- Description
- American Airlines pilot uniform coat. Dark blue with red interior lining, the coat also features two front flap pockets and four silver Captain stripes at the bottom of each sleeve. Attached to the upper left breast pocket is a name tag with printed text that reads: "CAPTAIN BEVERLEY BASS | B777 CHECK AIRMAN" as well as a pair of silver American Airlines pilot wings. On the upper right lapel is a small gold pin with printed text that reads: "GANDER." On the right interior of the coat is a sewn label with text: "Exclusively tailored for Beverley Bass" and a tag for Sal Moreno, Custom Tailor, Arlington, TX.
- Historical Notes
- Beverley Bass made history in 1986 as American Airlines’ first female captain. On 9/11, after U.S. airspace closed, she diverted her flight to Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where passengers and crew remained for four days. Bass wore this uniform jacket that day. Years later, she loaned it to actress Jenn Colella, who wore it for several Come From Away performances, connecting Bass’s lived experience to its theatrical portrayal.
