Plastic hard hat with cap-style brim and interior ratchet suspension as well as a red quilted fabric neck guard with chin strap. The hard hat is dark green with assorted stickers attached, including two small Canadian flag stickers on the front and a larger sticker with the Twin Towers on the top. On the back of the hard hat is a sticker for National Strike Force U.S. Coast Guard and two label stickers with printed text that read: "WENDY" and "GA 3 DMAT." A pair of clear plastic safety goggles are attached to the hat with the elastic strap stretched around the hat. The interior fabric neck guard on the hat is folded up, and the chin strap is stretched over the top of the hat. Tucked into the chin strap are a pair of light tan fabric gloves with "N.Y.C.H.A." printed on them as well as the KEVLAR logo.
Historical Notes
Following the September 11 attacks, Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) from across the country were dispatched to the World Trade Center disaster site. Steve and Wendy Nesheim from Atlanta, Georgia, responded with the DMAT GA-3 Team. Initially charged with responding to the Pentagon, GA-3 changed plans and headed to New York due to the scope of devastation at Ground Zero. Once on site, they were charged with caring for any injured survivors and administering aid to uniformed responders and volunteers working on the pile. The Nesheims and the rest of their team officially arrived in New York in the second week of October and worked ten-or twelve-hour shifts a day for two weeks.
This hard hat was worn by Wendy Nesheim while working at Ground Zero.
