Description Leather front piece created in memory of Steven Joseph Bates. The front piece includes the title "Lieutenant" and the number 235 for Engine 235 and has a horn denoting the rank of Engine Lieutenant.
Historical Notes Born in East Meadow, Long Island, Steven Bates lived with his girlfriend of 10 years, Joan, in Glendale, Queens. During 18 years with the FDNY, Steven—whose mother died when he was 15—came to regard firehouse friends as family. At Engine Company 235, Steven was known for cooking his specialty dish, sauerbraten. On September 11, Lieutenant Bates responded to the World Trade Center. He was 42 years old.
Curator's Comment Steven Joseph Bates was never recovered nor was any personal property found at Ground Zero. The FDNY reissued this front piece for Steven's loved ones. HIDE
