- Leather probationary firefighter helmet front piece belonging to Steven Gerard Siller. The front piece is made of brown worn leather bearing the identifier "PROB | FIREFIGHTER" in white printed text. The letter B is partially worn. This front piece was issued to Siller when he joined the department in 1995.
- Historical Notes
- On 9/11, FDNY Firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller had finished his shift at Squad 1 and was in his car when he heard about the attacks. Finding the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel closed to non-emergency vehicles, he ran through it to the towers, carrying 60 pounds of gear. In his honor, Stephen’s siblings founded the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and an annual 5K run retracing retracing the three and a half miles Stephan ran on 9/11. The course begins in Brooklyn, passes through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, and ends in lower Manhattan near the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Today, under the leadership of Chairman and CEO Frank Siller (Stephen’s brother), Tunnel to Towers supports veterans, first responders, and families of the fallen.
