Historical Notes
Retired FDNY firefighter Bob Beckwith volunteered in the search efforts at Ground Zero in the days after the attacks. He was wearing this helmet when U.S. President George W. Bush visited the site on September 14. Beckwith stood next to President Bush atop a pile of wreckage when the President addressed the rescue and recovery workers: “I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!
