Following the September 11 attacks, communities nationwide experienced feelings of shock and sorrow that were not described easily in words. As a result, people turned towards the reassuring symbol of the American flag. From the attack sites to U.S. missions abroad, displays of the American flag conveyed strength and unity during these times of unimaginable hardship.
In recognition of the nation's 250th anniversary, this feature gallery coincides with an installation in the Museum titled “Our Flag was Still There” which presents some of the many American flags in the Collection. This gallery highlights additional objects from the Collection exemplifying the significance of the flag as a symbol of the strength of American ideals in the face of adversity.
