After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, dogs and their handlers served at the Pentagon and World Trade Center sites, family assistance centers, and the forensic recovery operation at Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island. Hundreds of these K-9 teams searched the wreckage for survivors and victims, or comforted responders and families of the 9/11 victims.
The Museum’s collection includes numerous objects related to these K-9 teams. Some of those objects are presented on this website.
K-9 Courage is a temporary exhibition in the Museum’s South Tower Gallery, honoring the hundreds of dogs that participated in the response to the 9/11 attacks. Now on view until summer 2021.
