Description Maltese cross forged from steel recovered at the World Trade Center site.
Historical Notes This Maltese cross was made from World Trade Center steel in honor of the 343 firefighters killed on 9/11 and the recovery workers at Ground Zero.
Curator's Comment The Maltese cross is recognized as a symbol of the fire service and is often seen on firefighters’ uniforms, badges, and vehicles. The Maltese cross in the Museum’s collection was crafted from World Trade Center steel in honor of the 343 firefighters killed on 9/11 and the workers who participated in the Ground Zero rescue and recovery efforts.
In early 2002, the cross was given to Luis Mendes, who worked at Ground Zero on behalf of New York's Department of Design and Construction. Mendes later donated the cross to the Museum. HIDE
