Historical Notes
On the morning of September 11, alarms transmitted across New York City called 23 engine and ladder companies to respond to a plane crash at “Box 8087,” the FDNY’s shorthand reference for the World Trade Center. Firefighters from Engine Company 16, led by Lieutenant Mickey Kross, drove three miles south and reported to the lobby of the North Tower. Their names were recorded on a riding list. They expected to confront an accident caused by a small plane.
