Historical Notes Born in Sunnyside, Staten Island, Michael Quilty lived with his wife, Susan, and their two teenagers in Castleton Corners. His interests ranged from carpentry and making stained glass to scuba diving and flying airplanes. September 5 marked Michael’s 20th anniversary with the FDNY. On September 11, Lieutenant Quilty responded to the World Trade Center with Ladder Company 11. He was 42 years old.
Curator's Comment On September 5, 2001, Lieutenant Michael Quilty of FDNY Ladder Company 11 celebrated 20 years with the FDNY. He devoted his time outside of work to a variety of hobbies, ranging from piloting planes to making stained glass. He also set aside time to study for the Captain’s examination. On September 11, Lieutenant Quilty was seen at the World Trade Center directing other members of the Fire Department after the North Tower was struck. His shattered watch was recovered from Ground Zero a month later, along with his remains.
