Curator's Comment Flying was a second career for Alfred Marchand. For 21 years, he worked as a Department of Public Safety officer in New Mexico, rising to the rank of lieutenant and earning multiple commendations. With retirement approaching and a family to support, he researched new careers that could offer good benefits as well as the opportunity for him to travel and continue to provide public service. He decided to join United Airlines in late 2000. The weekend before September 11, Alfred and his wife vacationed in the Boston area. Early Tuesday morning, he reported for crew duty aboard Flight 175. HIDE
