Historical Notes
As soon as New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani learned that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, he rushed to the site for a briefing with emergency officials, to be followed by a press conference. The mayor’s press team arrived separately, bringing a portable podium and a "mult box," to which the press corps could connect its microphones and cameras. Seeing debris falling from the Twin Towers, the press team decided that the escalating disaster had made the location dangerous and directed reporters to City Hall, a short distance away.
The South Tower collapsed soon thereafter, and City Hall was evacuated. Still near the World Trade Center, the mayor and senior members of his administration found temporary shelter inside an office building close by. As the dust began to settle, they walked north, intent on establishing a new base of operations for city government. Reporters caught up with the mayor, who urged the public to evacuate lower Manhattan. He continued to address the public in briefings at temporary headquarters at the New York City Police Academy.
By day’s end, a member of the press team returned to lower Manhattan and found the mult box, blocks from its original location.
