Historical Notes
Many of the ironworkers who helped build the World Trade Center belonged to the Kahnawake and Akwesasne Mohawk Nations, located in upper New York State and Canada. Their work placing structural steel for the Twin Towers put them several floors above the elevators that transported the construction workers. As the towers neared their final heights, the half-mile round-trip to ground level and back at lunchtime became increasingly time consuming. Workers employed by Karl Koch Erecting Company were given thermoses in which they could bring a hot beverage or meal for their lunch breaks, eliminating the need to climb up and down stairways and make the long elevator trip.
