Description Albanian vest belonging to Simon Marash Dedvukaj. The vest is a bold red color with embroidered detailing.
Historical Notes Born in the Bronx, Simon Dedvukaj was interested in his Albanian heritage from a young age. He loved hearing family stories of Albania, and he met his wife, Elizabeta, there. They settled in Mohegan Lake, New York, and were to celebrate their first anniversary in October 2001. A maintenance foreman at ABM Industries, Simon was at work high in the North Tower on September 11. He was 26 years old.
Curator's Comment As a boy, Simon Dedvukaj spent hours with his grandfather, listening to stories about the family’s ancestral homeland of Albania. Though Simon was born and raised in the Bronx, his interest in his heritage ran deep, and his siblings viewed him as an encyclopedia of Albanian history. This embroidered xhamadan, a wool vest, comprises one element of a traditional Albanian folk ensemble. HIDE
