Historical Notes Freeport, Long Island, native John Perry lived in Manhattan. He was an NYPD officer with the 40th Precinct and a New York State Guard first lieutenant. John also held a law degree and served on the New York Civil Liberties Union board. John was planning to retire from the NYPD to work full time as a lawyer. Off duty on September 11, Officer Perry responded to the towers. He was 38 years old.
Curator's Comment Running was a lifelong passion for John Perry. He competed on the varsity track and field team at Seaford High School on Long Island and ran three marathons as an adult. After joining the New York City Police Department in 1993, John participated in the NYPD Runners’ Club. On September 11, Officer Perry was off-duty and getting his retirement paperwork together at police headquarters when he heard about the crisis erupting a few blocks away. He ran to the World Trade Center to assist. HIDE
