Curator's Comment Firefighter and recreational football player Durrell Pearsall was nicknamed Bronko for his size, which called to mind the 1930s football great Bronko Nagurski. Following in his father’s footsteps, Pearsall began his career as a volunteer firefighter on Long Island and earned two medals of valor before joining the FDNY in 1993. He served with FDNY Rescue Company 4 and responded with his unit on September 11. Recovered with his remains in October 2001 was a belt equipped with tools, several of which he had customized himself, and a necklace with a medallion depicting St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
