Description
Buffed zinc maquette for the stainless steel sculpture Ideogram, commissioned by the Port Authority’s Art Committee from James Rosati (1911-1988).
Historical Notes
The five-acre World Trade Center Plaza hosted several monumental works of art. Some, like James Rosati’s Ideogram, were commissioned for the site. In 1973, the 23-foot-high sculpture was installed between the Twin Towers, toward the western edge of the Plaza, before construction of the complex was completed.
After it was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the sculpture’s stainless steel elements were impossible to distinguish in the tons of metal wreckage at Ground Zero. No fragments were recovered.
This 1:12 scale model had been retained by the artist.
