Historical Notes
On the afternoon of September 11, 2001, New York City Firefighter James Pannullo of Engine Company 214 was searching the wreckage pile at the World Trade Center when he spotted red teddy bears amid the twisted steel and pulverized building debris. He picked one up and kept it, startled to realize that the area he was searching represented the former roof of the South Tower. The bear was a souvenir sold in the South Tower Observation Deck gift shop.
