Historical Notes Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Maile Hale lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her interests ranged from chemistry and business to modern dance. Two years after she joined Boston Investor Services as an administrative assistant, she became the firm’s chief operating officer and vice president. On September 11, Maile was attending a technology conference on the North Tower’s 106th floor. She was 26 years old.
Curator's Comment A pair of ballet slippers, a jar of sand, and lei garlands made of orchids were placed around a photograph of Maile Hale near the North Pool of the 9/11 Memorial on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Maile never lost her childhood delight in the ocean, even after moving to the mainland for college. Her interests in ballet and modern dance continued to serve as creative outlets into adulthood. Maile graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut in 1997 and remained on the East Coast for work. During the short time she was employed at Boston Investor Services, she rose from the position of administrative assistant to chief operating officer. HIDE
