Historical Notes Born in the Bronx, Jeremiah Ahern lived in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, with his wife, Beatriz. The couple had a grown daughter. After serving in the U.S. Army, Jeremiah attended college and then joined the Internal Revenue Service, later becoming an auditor at the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance. On September 11, Jeremiah was at his office on the 86th floor of the South Tower. He was 74 years old.
Curator's Comment According to his daughter, Geraldine, Jeremiah Ahern was concerned that he would have nothing to do in retirement. As a result, after more than 30 years at the U.S. Postal Service and the Internal Revenue Service, he started a new job at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in 1985. Outside of work, Jeremiah was an enthusiastic reader and enjoyed playing blackjack in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to keep his mind sharp. Jeremiah owned several decks of cards, including this one, and practiced his betting strategy with them. HIDE
