Historical Notes
This sign marked an entrance to 2 World Trade Center, also known as the South Tower. Its 107th-floor Observation Deck, a popular destination for millions of tourists, offered panoramic vistas of New York City and beyond. Named on the sign is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the interstate agency that created and managed the World Trade Center until July 24, 2001, when it signed a 99-year lease for the towers with Silverstein Properties. Removed and placed in storage before 9/11, the sign was spared destruction.
