Historical Notes
On September 11, 2001, Baseline employee Florence Jones was on the 77th floor of the South Tower when she saw debris falling from the North Tower. Sensing that something terrible had happened, she decided to leave the building, but first went up to the 78th floor to encourage colleagues there to evacuate as well. Jones had just returned to her desk to retrieve a pair of sneakers for the long walk down when Flight 175 hit her building. Jones hurriedly searched for an escape route and, with several coworkers, entered the only passable stairwell.
In the stairwell, the heels became an impediment to a fast exit, so her boss, Carl Boudakian, carried her shoes. She continued downstairs and all the way home in her stocking feet. A few days later, her boss returned the footwear. In the years that followed the attacks, Florence Jones became an advocate for survivors, speaking publicly about the emotional and medical issues she confronted as a result of her experience on 9/11.
