Historical Notes
In March 2002, New York City officials began to plan a ceremony to mark the completion of the recovery and cleanup at the World Trade Center site. They selected the last intact column, still anchored at bedrock, to serve as the focus of the ceremony. To mark the Last Column’s significance, an American flag was hung from a pole welded to its top. The flag was removed before workers cut the base of the Last Column to release it from its footing.
