Squawk Box
Description
Intercom speaker, known as a squawk box from the Los Angeles offices of Cantor Fitzgerald. Model/Manufacturer info: IPC Bridge, model number B9155, serial number 1473.
Historical Notes
Intercoms allowed financial services firms in the World Trade Center to communicate with satellite offices in other cities simultaneously. On 9/11, employees of Cantor Fitzgerald, located high in the North Tower, used these speaker systems known as squawk boxes to seek information from coworkers outside of New York City who were watching or listening to the unfolding news from lower Manhattan. Colleagues in other cities confirmed that a plane had crashed into the North Tower and tried to obtain information that might lead those trapped above the impact zone to safe exit routes.
