Historical Notes
With the impact of hijacked Flight 11 into the North Tower and Flight 175 into the South Tower, shattered glass and pieces of metal from the buildings fell to the streets below, killing at least one pedestrian and severely injuring others. Inside, on floors rapidly growing hot and filling with smoke, people broke windows in an effort to breathe fresh air.
Pieces of glass were recovered from the building debris at the Freshkills landfill.
