Historical Notes
Approximately 200 people were killed inside elevators in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Others were injured when jet fuel flowing down elevator shafts caused fireballs to erupt as elevator doors opened. Christopher Young, a temporary employee of insurance firm Marsh & McLennan, was alone in a descending elevator in the North Tower when, at 8:46 a.m., hijacked Flight 11 struck the building and the elevator came to an abrupt halt. Trapped for approximately 90 minutes, Young was able to pry open the elevator doors and evacuate successfully when a power surge caused the automatic electronic lock mechanism to fail.
