Historical Notes
Retail stores, houses of worship, and other establishments opened their doors to people walking north from lower Manhattan. Evacuees were offered bottled water, dust masks, sneakers, and other necessities. The New York City Rescue Mission, a shelter that provides emergency food, counseling, and other services, made telephones, showers, and other support available.
