Historical NotesAfter the crash of both planes, Tom Canavan took time to place the securities he had been processing into a First Union/Wachovia bank vault on the 47th floor of the North Tower before entering a stairwell with his coworker
Antoinette Duger. About an hour later, they reached the belowground shopping concourse. The South Tower collapsed moments later, burying Canavan in heavy debris. His mouth filled with dirt and the bottom of his pants caught on fire. Duger was nowhere in sight. Canavan crawled through the wreckage until he saw sunlight. After crossing the debris-strewn World Trade Center Plaza, Canavan walked to safety down the stopped escalator adjacent to the Vesey Street stairs. He was wearing this watch on 9/11.
