- Historical Notes
- Eduardo Torres was born in Cali, Colombia. He and his wife, Alissa, lived in Manhattan and were expecting a child in November 2001. His service as a paratrooper in the Colombian military had given Eduardo a taste for skydiving. He also liked to go hiking and bicycling. Eduardo was on the North Tower’s 104th floor on September 11, his second day as a senior broker at Cantor Fitzgerald. He was 31 years old.
Alissa Torres, whose husband, Luis Eduardo Torres, was killed at the World Trade Center, said she remembers thinking that her life was like something out of a comic book. In 2008, after six years of work, she published her graphic novel memoir about the year after 9/11, American Widow.
In it, Alissa depicts her struggles after 9/11, including difficulties securing assistance as she worked through the death of her husband and gave birth to their child. The novel is a retrospective on the time between the attacks and the first anniversary, explored through the lens of one grieving family member.
