- Workbook used by third grade students at the Zabuli Education Center. The blue and white notebook's cover features illustrations of iconic landmarks depicted on the front, including the Eiffel Tower. Printed text reads: "Education | English | English." There is a Post-in note on the back with handwritten text in Dari. Inside, the notebook is filled with handwritten text in English, with notations made in red pen. The English alphabet, vocabulary words, and phrases are written repeatedly on the pages.
- Historical Notes
Afghan-born humanitarian Razia Jan and Patti Quigley—whose husband, Patrick J. Quigley IV, was a passenger on hijacked Flight 175—met through their work advocating for Afghan communities after 9/11. In 2007, they cofounded Razia’s Ray of Hope Foundation to expand girls’ education in Afghanistan. In 2008, the Foundation opened the Zabuli Education Center, a free primary and secondary school for girls in rural Afghanistan. Despite the Taliban's return in 2021, it continues as a primary school for over 800 students.
At the Zabuli Education Center, students learn to read and write in Dari and English. In a community with limited literacy, Razia Jan saw writing’s impact. She had her instructors “teach the kindergarteners how to write their name and their father’s name” on the first day of school to help ease fathers’ concerns about their daughters’ education.
