- Pilot logbook belonging to LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. The black leather handheld notebook features printed text on the front that reads: "Pilot | Flight Log." Inside the book are handwritten notes tracking flying hours. On one particular page, dated 9/4/81, “FIRST SOLO!” is written in large yellow block text.

LeRoy Homer, Jr. grew up dreaming of flight. At age 15, he started taking flying lessons, working part-time jobs to pay for them. He tracked his hours in this flight log as he worked to get his private pilot’s license at age 17, launching his career in the sky. Homer served in the U.S. Air Force, continued in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and reached the rank of major, after joining United Airlines in 1995.
LeRoy's wife, Melodie, founded the LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Foundation in 2002 to support young adults pursuing careers as pilots, particularly those from communities underrepresented in aviation. The Foundation has helped more than 30 aspiring pilots earn their private pilot licenses—the first step LeRoy took in his own aviation career.
