First Aid Kit
- Description
- Handcrafted wooden first aid kit made by Glenn J. Winuk. The kit is designed like a cabinet and features a hinged door and knob handle. A red label on the front of the door includes printed text that reads: “FIRST AID STORAGE.” Inside the kit is four equal wooden shelves containing first aid supplies such as bandages and dressings. The wood is dented and scratched throughout.

Glenn built this first aid kit as a child, guided by his father and inspired by first responders in his family. Their example shaped a lifetime of service: he became a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Jericho, New York, and remained committed to helping others. After moving to Manhattan in 1998, he maintained ties to his hometown department. On 9/11, Winuk helped evacuate his office at 195 Broadway and was last seen racing to the nearby World Trade Center.
Inspired by Glenn’s selflessness, his brother, Jay, co-founded 9/11 Day with friend David Paine to promote acts of compassion and unity and transform a day of loss into one of positive action. Today, more than 30 million people honor this federally designated day of service with good deeds “focused on our common humanity.”
