With fires still burning at Ground Zero, Manhattan residents Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff watched businesses suffer in Tribeca and other downtown neighborhoods. Determined to breathe life back into their community and give New Yorkers something to celebrate, the film producer, actor, and investor respectively launched the Tribeca Festival in May 2002. They hoped to help revitalize lower Manhattan by reinforcing the city as a major filmmaking hub.
Intended as a one-time, post-9/11 event to help revitalize their neighborhood, the 2002 festival drew an estimated 150,000 people. Over five million people have attended the 24 festivals held since.
This festival program book is signed by a handful of the hundreds of people who helped organize the 2003 Tribeca Festival. Since then, the festival has grown to encompass video games, audio experiences, and virtual reality. Cofounder Craig Hatkoff said, “The job of the festival is no longer to get people back on the streets…It’s about finding new memories in lower Manhattan.”
