Historical Notes
Ayman al-Zawahiri became the leader of al-Qaeda following Osama bin Laden’s death in 2011. About ten years later, U.S. intelligence agencies tracked al-Zawahiri’s relatives to a building in Kabul, Afghanistan, that they believed to be his safehouse. This flag was flown aboard one of the support aircraft on the mission that killed al-Zawahiri.
