Historical Notes
Constructed in the fall of 2001 adjacent to the Medical Examiner's East 30th Street mortuary facility space, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) Memorial Park provided a designated staging area for the victims of the World Trade Center attacks' incoming human remains. The tent went on to serve as a holding place for forensic operations and cloistered visits by bereaved family members. Never intended as a permanent solution for the maintenance of still-unidentified or unclaimed victims’ remains, Memorial Park was dismantled after these remains were respectfully transferred to a new, purpose-built repository established at the Memorial site.
This object is a cross-section of a tree which stood in the OCME Memorial Park.
