Description
Child's handmade construction paper collage from the Calhoun School's "9/11: Through Young Eyes" visual narrative. The collage depicts the exterior of a red fire house with the number "77" on the door. Above is purple and black mourning bunting. Lit candles sit directly outside of the firehouse, and a sign on the left side of the door reads: "THANK YOU." Another on the right side of the door reads: "OUR HEROS" [sic]. The collage is captioned with typed text at the bottom that reads: "17. Firehouses were in mourning. Entire companies had perished."

Historical Notes
After the 9/11 attacks, eighth-grade students at the Calhoun School went on a museum field trip to see The Migration Series (1940–1941) by Jacob Lawrence. The series consists of 60 paintings chronicling the mass movement of Black Americans from the rural South to the urban North during the early part of the 20th century. The students then produced their own collages about 9/11’s local impact inspired by Lawrence’s work. They examined many facets of their experience, from memorialization and blood donations to prejudice and the onset of war in Afghanistan.
