Historical Notes Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting rescue and recovery operations. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently.
Curator's Comment Gary Miller, a certified emergency manager who joined the American Red Cross as a volunteer in 1960, was the Director of Disaster Services for the Cincinnati, Ohio, area chapter in 2001. In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, Miller was appointed as the first Job Director for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief at Ground Zero following the catastrophe. Arriving in New York on September 12th, he later met with experts, staff members, and fellow volunteers across the country as he began to coordinate disaster relief efforts. In the ensuing days and weeks, he and his team provided food for thousands of rescue workers, as well as housing, health services, and therapeutic care for the families of those killed. HIDE
