Historical Notes
Michael Hingson and Roselle, his Labrador retriever guide dog, were on the 78th floor of the North Tower when hijacked Flight 11 struck the building. Hingson was preparing for a meeting when he heard a noise that resembled an explosion and felt the building tilt sideways. Moments later, Hingson heard a coworker exclaim that they were seeing millions of pieces of burning paper outside of the window. As others began to panic, Roselle stayed composed. Hingson chose to trust her judgment, and he stayed calm as well. Together, they maneuvered carefully around debris and made their way to Stairwell B at the center of the building to start their evacuation. Upon entering the stairwell, he smelled an odor reminiscent of the kerosene lanterns used at his childhood Boy Scout camp, which he correctly guessed to be jet fuel. After an hour-long descent, Hingson and Roselle exited the North Tower safely about 30 minutes before it collapsed.
