Historical Notes
Naperville, Illinois, native Dan Shanower lived in Arlington, Virginia. In the U.S. Navy since 1985, he had served several tours as an intelligence officer, including on the USS Midway, before taking a job at the Pentagon. On September 11, Commander Shanower was in the Navy Command Center gathering briefing information on the World Trade Center attacks when Flight 77 hit the building. He was 40 years old.

Curator's Comment
Dan Shanower joked that he signed up with the U.S. Navy because he did not want to cook his own meals, but family remember his interest in the military developing while he was studying political science. Dan went on to travel internationally for the U.S. Navy before returning stateside for a job in the Office of Naval Intelligence, reporting to the Pentagon at 3:00 a.m. to prepare briefings. He hoped to eventually resume traveling as an attaché to an ambassador. Dan also spoke about dreams beyond his naval career: writing a book, diving for treasure, and starting a family.
