Description
Child's handmade pencil drawing by Zacarias, age 6, from the Valencia region of Spain on September 13, 2001. The drawing depicts the Twin Towers. Above the two towers are two airplanes dropping big pink flowers over the towers. At the top is written "Jueves, 13 de Septiembre de 2001." On the back side of the page is cursive handwritten text in Spanish that reads:
ESP: Viernes 14 de Septiembre | Yo quiero ser un piloto de la paz. Las armas que voy a utilizar son las flores. Desde mi avión voy a lanzar una lluvia de flores para los hombres y mujeres que vivían en las Torres Gemelas de Nueva York.
ENG: Friday September 14 | I want to be a pilot of peace. The weapons I will use are flowers. Flowers will rain from my plane for the men and women that lived in the Twin Towers of New York.
Historical Notes
In response to the attacks on America, an elementary school teacher in Spain created a design of planes releasing flowers over the Twin Towers, recharacterizing the images of planes and towers as one of peace and love. Her students drew their own versions in the days following the attacks. The class’s artistic statement included, “Yo quiero ser un piloto de la paz [I want to be a pilot of peace].”
