Description
Mixed media mural created by children at St. John’s School in Houston Texas. This mural depicts a cityscape featuring the Twin Towers, partially obscured by a skyscraper. Gray and black smoke billows out from behind both towers while the tower on the right is struck by a plane. A stain of orange-red emanates from the point of impact and blood-like red spots drip along the building’s facade. Above the horizon line, the sky is vivid blue, and a large yellow sun dominates the upper left quadrant behind skyscrapers.
The cityscape is identifiable as New York City through taxicab iconography and the presence of a hot dog vendor and a New York City firetruck. The scene is populated by seven figures, none of whom are smiling. The frowning woman in the center foreground is accompanied by a speech bubble that reads “My husband works there!”
In the scene's bottom left, the mural’s creators have added a handwritten note that reads: “We hope that this will never happen to any building ever again. We made this mural in honor of the Twin Towers which once stood in New York City and for all the people who died there. God bless their families. ~ Roosh, Ryan, Vijay 2-3."
Historical Notes
Three second graders created this mural in 2009 at St. John's School in Houston, Texas. The assignment was to make a cityscape, but the boys convinced their teacher to let them depict the 9/11 attacks. They had no memories of the attacks, so they devoted their recess to research and work on the piece. At first, they drew the figures smiling, but upon further conversations they decided to replace the smiling people with scared and sad ones.
