Description
War on Terrorism service medal with a scarlet, white, gold, and blue ribbon (right in photo). The bronze medal depicts an eagle with a shield in front of a globe. The eagle is holding an olive branch and three arrows. Text on the medal reads: "WAR ON TERRORISM SERVICE." The back of the medal depicts a laurel wreath. Attached to the ribbon is a gold-plated Coast Guard Petty Officer (CPO) collar pin depicting a fouled anchor with a silver-plated shield.

The U.S. Department of Defense issued medals to recognize service in post-9/11 military operations, including campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Military medals are among the tributes occasionally left at the reflecting pools of the 9/11 Memorial. These medals were found on one of the South Pool panels listing victims from the New York City Police Department. Attached to each medal is a pin depicting an anchor and shield, representing the rank of a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard.
