Historical Notes
Retired NYPD Detective Richard J. Miller participated in the recovery efforts after 9/11 and raised one of the first American flags amid the rubble at Ground Zero. Det. Miller went on to co-found the Post 911 Foundation, a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring and assisting first responders and veterans who served during the Global War on Terror in the aftermath of 9/11. The "Follow the Flag" campaign, launched in 2009, was created to ignite a revival of the pride and resiliency that united America after 9/11 and to raise money for first responders and veterans.
Miller donated this flag that traveled from Afghanistan to Ground Zero, then to Djibouti, Africa, and several locations around the country, including West Point Military Academy. The flag concluded its journey at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum on the ten-year anniversary of 9/11.
